There are numerous benefits of the Layen's hive including better protection from the elements, no heavy lifting, and less disturbance during hive inspections to name a few.
I currently do not sell Layen's frames. You can purchase Layen's frames from Dr. Leo's website at www.horizontalhive.com.
Do not fear, the bees are doing great and I'm actively involved with them. There are videos in the works, even some that have been recorded and are awaiting editing. I am not a video editor by profession and it takes me a significant amount of time produce a video of sufficient quality. A number of life circumstances have limited my time editing including pursing another degree and my wife and I having a baby. Please enjoy the videos currently available!
Layen's frames most likely will not fit in an extractor designed for Langstroth frames. Because my focus currently is growing my apiary, the majority of the honey the bees make gets used to make more bees! Occasionally, because I'm using foundationless frames, the bees draw out crooked comb. In these cases I use the crush and strain method to harvest honey.
If you still want to purchase an extractor for Layen's frames, check out the store section of Dr. Leo's website at www.horizontalhives.com.
The bees and I live about an hour south of Buffalo, NY.
The majority of the cost is tied up in lumber. If you plan to maximize the dimensions of your lumber before purchase, you should be able to get the lumber for $50/hive. Of course paint and screen add additional costs, but the price goes down the more you build!
The bees are never treated for anything. The goal of this entire project is to produce and promote the genetic traits in bess that can live without people and that are healthier than treated bees. For this reason I maintain 100% treatment free bees. In order to get the traits necessary to live without treatments, I focus on trapping bees in the wild that are living without treatments and only breeding from bees that have survived through the winter.
